HABIT 1: Be Proactive

Think about a situation in your work or personal life that frustrates you and that you tend to respond to reactively. Briefly describe this situation:

  • When I am interrupted…
    • breathe, then either attempt to continue conversation OR think about what was just said, then respond.
  • When someone asks a loaded question (one that infers a questionable fact)
    • Either say, "I don't know how to respond to that question" OR "Your question suggests..." or "Are you asking / assuming..." .
    • For me to answer may falsely make you think I agree". THEN, answer the questions only responding to the piece that makes me feel safe.
  • When someone uses condescending words, tone or body language
    • Go brain-dead / breathe
  • When someone takes advantage of me
    • If I had no hand in it, ignore it. If I did, identify that and remember for next time.
  • When someone ignores me or acts like I'm air
    • Go brain-dead / breathe
  • When someone treats me poorly, then reacts angrily when I object.
    • Go brain-dead / breathe, but DON'T feel bad for speaking up for yourself.
  • When someone imposes expectations on me that are not welcome...
    • Go brain-dead / breathe

Identify some of the “hot buttons” that trigger a reactive response in you.

Identify the circumstances, mood, or feelings that contribute to your reactive responses.
  • sudden speech
  • lack of physical acknowledgement
  • quick movement
  • loud or inaudible speech

List which situations you can directly affect in your circle of influence.

Identify what situations are only a part of your circle of concern.

Consider your Circle of Influence at work, at home, and in the community. Identify a specific situation in which you could become a transition figure. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-DIsWkaDJo

Mission Statement:
3 verbs: Explore, Create, and Educate
3 Principles/Causes:
3 People/Groups: Myself, my family, students
My mission is to explore _, create and educate to/with/for myself, my family and students.

My mission is to explore and experience opportunities of discovery, growth and development to enhance the lives of myself and others. In other words…Climb the mountain!
A vision statement must be written, in present tense and covers a variety of activities and time frames. It includes descriptive details to anchor it to reality.
Where will I be in 3 years? 5 years? 10 years? 20 years? w/ the status quo?
A:
Who is living the life you most envy? Describe what you think it is like.
A: I envy those who can plan something, put it into effect, problem-solve along the way and find pride in the successful outcome, without giving more concern for what went wrong and what didn't get done

Who is doing the kind of work you most wish you could be doing? Describe what their work life must be like.
A: There is a guy who has been writing a blog. Where does he get the time? I want to write and share.

If you only had 6 months, what would you be doing?
A: Spend time helping others and enjoying others (Cheryl, family, etc). I would also spend more time in music and nature.
At home: I want to have a clean house with a budget that is under control (I hate debt!) so that Cheryl would be taken care of financially.

What do you want more of in your relationships? Work?
A: Home: I want to spend more personal/intimate time with Cheryl, Whitney, Mike, Weston, Makenna and the others if there were interested. Doing what? Talking, playing, sharing life's stuff.
Work: I want more order, confidence, calm, fun

What do you want less of in your relationships? Work?
A: Home: Arguing, Communication errors
Work: Anxiety from being unprepared and without a plan

Describe in detail your ideal work setting and our ideal work day.
A: I would go in having my unit plan and daily lesson plan ready along with the materials. I know that all will be able to successfully attempt the challenges. I will initiate prepared tweaks when students/materials/etc. goes awry. The kids will know what to do before, during and after for both the lesson and the class period.

Describe in detail your ideal coworkers.
A: These coworkers would give and take in the most positive way.

If money were no object, what would your life be like?
A:I would pay for others to help me with my problems (Develop unit plans, Clean the house,) Work less so I had more time for the people and things I value.

Imagine that you are 10 times bolder. What would you do in your primary love relationship? In your work setting? In your community? In your family? In your place of worship?
A: I don't think I have a problem here :-)

Imagine that it is Monday morning 9 am, 3 years from now. Where are you? What are you doing? Who are you seeing? What are you wearing?
A:Same place, same thing, same stuff, hopefully newer clothes but equally as casual and comfortable.

It’s now noon on the same day. Who are you going to see? Where are you going for lunch?
A: Same, same, same

It’s now Saturday 6 pm. Where are you? What are you doing? Who are you seeing? What are you wearing?
A: I am either with Cheryl and/or family and/or friends talking/playing

You are now a very old person walking with a school child who asks you, “What in your life are you most proud of?”
A: Throughout my life, I have regularly (not always) been able to effectively communicate with others so as to calm, empower and inspire others. To know that I had a hand in making someone happy, relieved, aware, skilled, capable, etc has always given me great joy, because it feeds my constant feelings of low-self-esteem.

You are about to die. What did you accomplish before you left? As a result of your having lived, 3 things have changed or shifted in the world. What are they?
A: I helped Cheryl and her daughters get out / stay out of a destructive relationship, thus preventing Weston and Makenna from ever knowing such evil. I encouraged countless students that they were capable and valuable.

MY VISION: My vision is to happy. Therefore, I will...

  • Eat well and exercise

  • Reflect, plan and follow through

  • Challenge myself in all areas of life

  • Give thought and energy to others

  • Eliminate all unacceptable debt
